What do we want our children to achieve from our English curriculum?
Both reading and writing play an extremely important role throughout our whole curriculum, whereby they are integral to success in every other subject. We emphasise this importance from EYFS through to the end of Year 6, when our children transition to secondary school. We aim to provide an English curriculum which equips children with the confidence to communicate effectively, a vast knowledge of vocabulary, the flair to write creatively and purposefully and a passion for high quality literature.
How do we ensure that this happens?
Our reading and writing journey begins in EYFS and more information about our phonics and reading across school can be found in the separate tabs above.
Our writing curriculum has been organised into blocks to facilitate effective genre coverage across school.
- All classes complete one narrative fiction block every term.
- All classes complete two poetry blocks every year (autumn 2 and summer 2).
- All classes complete at least two of each non-fiction block per year:
- Non-chronological report
- Persuasion
- Explanation
- Discussion
- Recount
- Instructions (KS1 only)
The skills linked to these genres are consolidated through repeated practice across the year groups, but the teaching is also progressive in terms of ensuring new levels of challenge in each block as children enter a new year group.
Across the blocks, the English curriculum is underpinned by four facets which contribute to the wider development of our children:
- Diversity and Inclusion (E.g. Refugees)
- High Quality Literature (E.g. Classics)
- Our Local Area (E.g. Wind Turbines)
- Understanding the World Around Us (E.g. British Values)
